Malankara Dam, at Muttom near Thodupuzha in Idukki district, is an irrigation dam that has grown into a popular local destination. Built across the Thodupuzha River, it forms the Malankara Reservoir, an artificial lake that Kerala Tourism describes as about 11 kilometres long. The reservoir is part of the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project (MVIP).
Visitors come for the water views, a walking track, a children’s park and activities such as boating, fishing and picnicking. Its position near Thodupuzha makes it an easy addition to a trip through central Idukki.
Where Is Malankara Dam?
Malankara Dam is at Muttom in Idukki district, about 7 km from Thodupuzha. It lies on the Thodupuzha–Moolamattom road, so it is easy to reach from the town.
From Kochi, the dam is roughly 66 km by road. The exact distance depends on your starting point and route.
Because the dam is so close to Thodupuzha, you can see it as a short stop rather than a separate journey. That suits travellers staying in or passing through the town.
Malankara Dam and Its History
Malankara Dam was completed in 1994 as part of the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project. It stands across the Thodupuzha River and supports irrigation in parts of Idukki, Ernakulam and Kottayam districts.
The project is closely linked to the Moolamattom Power House of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project. Water released after power generation at Moolamattom, together with runoff from the Thodupuzha River catchment, supplies the irrigation project.
This gives Malankara a role beyond tourism. The reservoir is part of a wider system that connects hydropower, irrigation and agriculture.
Malankara Reservoir: Things to Do
The reservoir is the main recreational attraction at Malankara.
Enjoy the Reservoir
The reservoir is the setting for most of the sightseeing. You can walk around the developed areas, take photographs and look across the water to the surrounding landscape. The scenery is more open than the steep hills deeper in Idukki, and it needs no trek.
Boating and Fishing
Boating and fishing are associated with the reservoir. If boating is the main reason for your trip, confirm that it is operating before you travel, because arrangements can change.
Walk Around the Visitor Area
A walking track runs through the developed visitor area. It is an easy way to explore the surroundings and suits families and anyone who wants some time outdoors without a long hike.
Children’s Park
The children’s park is a good break for families. You can combine it with a walk around the visitor area.
Picnic and Outdoor Time
Malankara also works as a short picnic stop. Use the designated areas and take food packaging and other waste with you.
Places to Visit Around Malankara Dam
Malankara fits well into a wider Thodupuzha–Idukki itinerary. The places below lie in different directions, so plan them around your overall route.
Thodupuzha
Thodupuzha is the nearest major town and a practical base. It has accommodation, restaurants, shops and transport facilities, which suit both day trips and longer stays.
Muttom
Muttom is the locality where the dam is located. It also lies on the route that connects Thodupuzha with the interior of Idukki.
Moolamattom
Moolamattom lies further along the same road and is worth adding if you are interested in the Idukki hydroelectric system. Its link with Malankara is explained in the history section above.
Thommankuthu Waterfalls
Thommankuthu is a separate nature stop known for its series of waterfalls and forest trails. It is a longer drive from Malankara, so treat it as part of a longer itinerary rather than an attraction beside the dam.
Elaveezhapoonchira
Elaveezhapoonchira offers highland scenery and wide views, a contrast to the reservoir landscape. It suits travellers who want to continue into the hills after visiting the Thodupuzha side.
Vagamon
Vagamon is known for its rolling hills, meadows and viewpoints. It works well as a longer onward trip from Malankara.
Idukki Dam
Travellers going deeper into the district can include Idukki Dam, one of Idukki’s major attractions. Check current visiting arrangements before you go.
Before You Visit
- Check current visitor access before you start your journey.
- Confirm boating availability if you want to go boating.
- Check the weather forecast during the monsoon.
- Wear comfortable footwear for the walking track.
- Carry drinking water and other essentials if you plan to stay for several hours.
- Follow instructions at the dam and visitor areas.
- Stay out of restricted sections of the dam.
- Do not leave plastic, food waste or other rubbish around the reservoir.
Entry arrangements and activities can change, so current local information is more reliable than older schedules or prices.
Why Malankara Dam Is Worth Adding to an Idukki Trip
Malankara is an easy stop that adds something different to an Idukki itinerary. You see a working irrigation reservoir that visitors can enjoy, and you can learn how water from the Idukki hydropower system supports farmland across three districts.
It sits close to Thodupuzha, so it takes little time and little planning. It also makes a pleasant break before you continue to waterfalls, hill viewpoints or the larger dams further into Idukki.
